Best Customers

This tutorial will show you two ways to segment your most valuable customers. The Explicit Filters method assumes you already know how often your best customers purchase and how much they spend. The Ranking Filters method uses our ranking algorithms to compare customers relatively using percentiles.

Explicit Filters

  1. Click Segments in the main navigation.

  2. Then, click Add New Segment

  3. Name the segment and click Save.

  4. First, we'll add a filter for the customer's total lifetime spend. For this, we'll use the Customer Properties context and the Customer total revenue filter. For this example, let's assume that we want to find customers who have spent over $1,000 in their lifetime:

  1. Next, let's find customers who have made a purchase within the last year. For this, we'll want to add a Customer order count filter in combination with a timeframe argument:

  1. Once you've set the Customer order count filter, click Save Changes. The segment will take a few minutes to generate a list of great customers who match your filters.

Ranking Filters

Ranking Filters are in Beta. Please contact us if you would like to have this enabled for your account.

Next, we'll use a different approach to surface your best customers using Ranking filters. This approach differs from using explicit definitions because it doesn't require you to know the correct threshold of spend or purchase recency. We'll find customers by looking at how they rank compared to other customers, using percentiles.

  1. Click Segments in the main navigation.

  2. Then, click Add New Segment

  3. Name the segment and click Save.

  4. We'll start by using the Customer Insights context and the Customer's purchase total spend is in the filter. We'll use this to find the Top 20% of our customer base in terms of total lifetime spend:

  1. Next, we'll add a filter to find customers who have purchased recently relative to other customers. For this, we'll use the Customer's purchase recency is in the filter to find the 20% of our customer base who has purchased most recently:

  1. Finally, let's add an additional filter for Customer's purchase frequency. Customers who purchase more frequently than others are more loyal, so this will add an additional layer of intelligence to our segment:

  1. Click Save Changes and your Rank-based Best Customer segment will generate. With a few clicks, we found our most recent, more frequent, and most valuable customers.
